C2 Spanish Vocabulary List, Proficient CEFR Words

Near-native Spanish precision. Subtle connotation, literary register, and idiomatic fluency.

Years of immersion. DELE C2 / SIELE max level.

About C2

C2 Spanish is precision work. The active vocabulary is 16,000+ words, but the value is in nuance: ironic register, literary tense (the rare passive ser + participle, the historical present), and the idioms that mark a true speaker (estar en su salsa, irse por las ramas, no tener pelos en la lengua). Awareness of regional registers (Iberian formal vs Rioplatense informal) is part of competence.

Who this list is for

If you can read Borges or García Márquez fluently, write a publishable essay in Spanish, and adapt your register from a children's book to a legal contract, you're around C2. DELE C2 is the highest level, equivalent to native-educated proficiency.

How to study

At C2 there's no shortcut to volume. Read across genres: literary fiction, philosophy, journalism, technical writing. Pay attention to register cues that feel off when you write; they're usually subtle markers a native would never miss. Use spaced repetition for rare idioms and literary vocabulary you want to activate. Maintenance, not acquisition, is the focus.
