What Is Interleaving? Why Mixing Practice Beats Doing One Thing at a Time

Studying one thing until you have it, then moving to the next, feels like the sensible way to work. It is also, in study after study, the weaker way. Mixing topics up produces worse practice sessions and better long-term learning, which is an uncomfortable trade most people refuse to make.

Interleaving is the practice of mixing different types of material within a single study session instead of grinding through one type at a time. Twenty past-tense verbs, then twenty prepositions, then twenty phrasal verbs is blocked practice. Shuffling all sixty together is interleaved practice.

It is one of the few study techniques where the version that feels worse is reliably the better one, and that gap between how it feels and how it works is the whole story.

Blocked practice: why it feels so good

Work through thirty questions of the same type and you get fast. By question ten you have stopped thinking about which method applies, because there is only one, so you are just executing it. Accuracy climbs, the session feels smooth, and you finish convinced you have learned it.

What you have actually learned is narrower than it looks. You practised carrying out a procedure; you never practised deciding which procedure the situation calls for. Come back a week later, with the questions mixed in among others, and that missing skill is exactly the one you need.

What the research found

Doug Rohrer and Kelli Taylor ran the study that made this concrete in mathematics: students who practised different problem types mixed together did worse during practice than students who worked in blocks, and then substantially outperformed them on a later test. The pattern has held up in classroom replications since.

The stranger result came from Nate Kornell and Robert Bjork, who had people learn to recognise the styles of different painters. Mixing artists up beat studying each artist's work in a block, and it was not close. What makes it memorable is that when they asked participants afterwards which method had helped more, most said blocking, including many who had personally done better with interleaving. People are poor judges of their own learning, and fluency during practice is what fools them.

Why it works

Two mechanisms, mostly. The first is discrimination: when items from different categories sit next to each other, you are forced to notice what distinguishes them, and those contrasts are where understanding lives. Studying twenty past-tense verbs in a row never asks you to tell past tense apart from anything else.

The second is retrieval. In a block, the answer stays loaded in working memory from the previous question, so you barely retrieve it at all. Mix things up and each item has to be pulled from long-term memory afresh, which is the effortful process that actually strengthens it, the same reason recall beats rereading.

Robert Bjork's term for this is desirable difficulty: conditions that slow you down during learning and improve retention afterwards. Spacing is the other famous example, which is why spaced repetition and interleaving tend to show up together, and why both feel less productive than the methods they beat.

What it looks like in a language

Concretely: do not sit down and drill only food vocabulary for forty minutes. Mix food words with the phrasal verbs you added last week and the collocations from the article you read on Tuesday. Do not do a whole session of one grammar structure either; alternate between two or three that you confuse with each other, because confusable pairs are precisely where interleaving pays.

Any decent flashcard app already does a version of this for you, since a review queue is drawn from your whole deck rather than one topic. That is worth knowing: if you review from a mixed deck daily, you are interleaving without calling it that. The place to add it deliberately is grammar drills and textbook exercises, which are almost always laid out in blocks by design.

When blocking is still right

Interleaving is not a rule to apply blindly. When you meet something genuinely new, a bit of blocked practice first is sensible, because you cannot discriminate between things you do not yet understand individually. Get the mechanism straight, then start mixing.

The mistake is staying in the block long after you have got it, which is what most textbooks and most self-study routines do, because a page of the same exercise type is easier to write and more satisfying to complete.

Putting it to work

The practical move is to stop organising study by topic and start organising it by time. One mixed session a day, drawn from everything you are currently learning, beats a themed session per topic per week.
