C2 Italian is the level of educated native speakers. The active vocabulary is 16,000+ words across registers, with full mastery of literary tenses, the trapassato remoto (fu stato, ebbe fatto), and the idioms that mark a true speaker. Awareness of regional varieties and the distinction between Italian and dialects (Sicilian, Neapolitan, Venetian) is part of competence at this level.
If you can read Dante in modern editions and Petrarch with notes, write a publishable essay, and code-switch between literary and colloquial Italian, you're around C2. CELI 5 / C2 is the highest Italian certification.
At C2 the work is maintenance and refinement. Read across centuries: medieval (Boccaccio in modern editions), 19th-century (Manzoni), 20th-century (Calvino, Sciascia, Morante), and contemporary journalism. Pay attention to what feels off when you write, usually a subtle register or idiom gap. Use spaced repetition for rare expressions and literary vocabulary.
