About C2

C2 German is the level of educated native speakers. The active vocabulary is 16,000+ words across registers: Bildungssprache (educated speech), Behördensprache (officialese), literary German, and dialectal awareness. The Konjunktiv I in indirect speech becomes natural, idioms feel automatic, and you can read 19th-century literature without flinching at the sentence length.

Who this list is for

If you can read Goethe and Kafka with fluency, write a Habilitationsschrift, and code-switch between formal Hochdeutsch and regional vernacular, you're around C2. Goethe C2 / Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom is the highest German certification, required for some legal and academic positions.

How to study

At C2 the work is maintenance and refinement. Read across genres: literary fiction, Feuilleton, scientific journals, classical works. Pay attention to register cues that feel off in your writing; they're subtle markers a Muttersprachler would never miss. Use spaced repetition for rare idioms and literary vocabulary. The vocabulary grows invisibly and never stops.
