C1 Spanish is where vocabulary work shifts from quantity to register and collocation. Around 8,000 words, plus an awareness of regional varieties: vosotros (Spain) vs ustedes (Latin America), distinct preterite vs present perfect preferences, and lexical differences (coche/auto/carro, móvil/celular). Idiomatic phrases (poner en marcha, dar por sentado, hacer caso) start defining your fluency.
If you can read literature in Spanish, follow rapid native speech across accents, and write an academic-style essay, you're around C1. Most learners reach C1 after 3–5 years, typically with significant immersion. DELE C1 is the level expected for postgraduate study in Spanish.
At C1 the highest-leverage activity is consuming literary and journalistic Spanish: short stories, essays, opinion columns. Notice collocations rather than isolated words: tomar una decisión, hacer frente a, dar lugar a. Use spaced repetition for idioms and fixed expressions. Pick one regional variety to focus on (e.g., Mexican vs Argentinian vs Iberian) so you don't mix accents.
