The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve, Explained for Language Learners
In the 1880s, a German psychologist sat alone in a room memorizing nonsense syllables and timing how fast he forgot them. The curve he plotted is the reason every serious vocabulary app today uses spaced repetition. Here is what he actually found, and what it means for your study schedule.
Almost every language-learning app you use today, from Anki to Duolingo to MindDory, traces its review scheduling back to a single set of experiments performed in the 1880s by a German psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus. The graph that came out of those experiments is called the forgetting curve, and it explains a frustrating truth about vocabulary study: most of what you learn in a single session is gone within a day if you do nothing about it.
The good news is that the same curve also tells you exactly what to do about it. Once you understand what it predicts, the entire idea of spaced repetition stops feeling like an app gimmick and starts feeling like the only sensible response to how human memory actually works.
What Ebbinghaus actually did
From around 1880 to 1885, Ebbinghaus ran a long series of experiments on himself. He invented a list of meaningless three-letter syllables - things like WID, ZOF, KEM - so that prior knowledge and associations could not bias the results. He memorized lists of these syllables to the point of perfect recall, then tested himself again at fixed intervals: 20 minutes later, an hour later, a day later, a week later, and so on.
What he plotted from those tests is the forgetting curve. The shape is steep and unforgiving at first, then flattens out. In rough numbers from his original data: about 40 percent of the material is gone after 20 minutes, more than half is gone after an hour, and around two thirds is gone after one day. After about a month, what remains - if you do nothing - is a small residue of the original list.
Modern researchers replicated his procedure in 2015 with the same general result. The decay pattern he found is real and reproducible, even if individual numbers depend heavily on what you are learning, how well you encoded it, and how meaningful it is to you.
What the curve actually predicts
The curve is not saying you will lose two thirds of every word you ever learn within a day. It is saying that when you encode a piece of information once, with no further reinforcement, retention falls off rapidly at first and then slowly approaches a low baseline. The decay is exponential in shape: most of the loss happens in the first few hours, and what survives the first day or two tends to last much longer.
For a language learner, that means a vocabulary session you ran yesterday is already most of the way down the curve right now. If you do nothing today, by next week the words will mostly be gone. This is why people who study hard for an hour each day but never review feel like they are running on a treadmill - they are.

Why spaced repetition flattens the curve
Here is the part that changes everything. Each time you successfully recall a piece of information, the curve resets - and it resets flatter than before. The second time you recall a word, you forget it more slowly. The third time, slower still. After enough well-timed reviews, the curve becomes nearly horizontal: the word stays with you for months or years with very occasional refreshing.
The trick is the timing. Reviewing too soon wastes effort, because you have not forgotten enough to gain anything from the recall. Reviewing too late means the word is already gone and you are essentially relearning it from scratch. The sweet spot is reviewing right as you are about to forget - which is exactly the schedule that spaced repetition algorithms try to predict.
Cognitive psychology research, including work by Cepeda and colleagues, suggests that the optimal first review for material you want to remember long-term is roughly one to two days after the initial learning. After that, intervals expand: a few days, then a week, then a few weeks, then a month or more, doubling or tripling each time you successfully recall.
A practical schedule for vocabulary
You do not need to memorize a formula to put this into practice. The basic shape that any spaced repetition system follows for a vocabulary card looks roughly like this, and you can run it manually in a notebook if you want to.
- Day 0: learn the word with context (an example sentence, an image, or a translation)
- Day 1: review it once - this is the single most important review
- Day 3: review again
- Day 7: review again
- Day 14: review again
- Day 30: review again
- After that: review every couple of months until the word feels permanent
What the curve cannot do
The forgetting curve is a powerful model, but it has real limits. It was built on memorizing meaningless syllables in isolation, and human memory works very differently when material is meaningful, emotional, or connected to something you already know.
Words you encounter in a story you cared about, in a song you love, or in a conversation that mattered will stick far longer than the curve predicts. This is why pure flashcard study is not enough on its own: it gives you efficient encoding and review, but the words become genuinely durable when you also meet them in real content.
The curve also says nothing about retrieval cues. A word you can produce in a flashcard quiz is not the same as a word you can produce in a real conversation. That gap between recognition and production is the difference between passive and active vocabulary, and closing it requires using the word, not just reviewing it.
The honest takeaway
The forgetting curve is not a productivity hack or a marketing concept. It is a real, repeatedly validated description of how human memory decays without reinforcement. Anyone who tells you that you can learn a thousand words in a week and keep them is either lying or using a definition of "learn" that the curve would laugh at.
