C1 German introduces the Konjunktiv I (er sagte, er sei gekommen) for reported speech, mainly seen in journalism. Vocabulary climbs to around 8,000 words with a focus on nominal style (das Erkennen, die Vermeidung, beim Lesen). You also gain awareness of regional varieties: standard German vs Austrian (das Bundesland, die Marille), Swiss German (Grüezi, das Velo), and dialectal markers.
If you can read literature, follow philosophy lectures, and write an academic essay, you're around C1. Most learners reach C1 after 3–5 years, typically with significant time spent in a German-speaking country. Goethe C1 is expected for postgraduate study in German.
At C1 vocabulary acquisition becomes incidental: read literary fiction (Schlink, Hesse, Mann) and quality journalism. Notice the nominal style and learn its triggers. Use spaced repetition for idioms (jemandem auf den Wecker gehen, die Daumen drücken, mit der Tür ins Haus fallen). Watch German-language films across genres to build register awareness.
