C1 Italian includes the passato remoto (fu, andò, venne), used in literature and in southern Italian speech, and a full sense of register that distinguishes formal, neutral, and colloquial Italian. Vocabulary climbs to around 8,000 words with attention to nuance and to regional varieties: standard Italian, the strong Roman / Florentine / Milanese inflections, and the relationship between Italian and dialects (which are not just accents).
If you can read 20th-century literature (Calvino, Eco, Ferrante in original), follow university lectures, and write an academic essay, you're around C1. Most learners reach C1 after 3–5 years, typically with significant time in Italy. CELI 4 / C1 is expected for postgraduate study in Italian.
At C1 read across genres: contemporary literature, classic novels (Manzoni, Pirandello), and journalism (Repubblica, Corriere). Notice the passato remoto in fiction and learn to recognize its forms. Use spaced repetition for idioms (in bocca al lupo, prendere lucciole per lanterne, fare orecchie da mercante) and for register synonyms.
