About Goethe C1

Goethe-Zertifikat C1 certifies advanced command: understanding demanding text, recognising implicit meaning, and expressing ideas fluently without visible searching. At C1 the work is register and collocation rather than raw vocabulary, and control of the formal nominal style, im Hinblick auf, in Bezug auf, unter Berücksichtigung, is what distinguishes the level. It is also offered modularly.

Who this list is for

Goethe-Zertifikat C1 is the level expected for university study in German and for professional roles where German is the working language rather than a courtesy. It suits learners who read comfortably and follow rapid speech across regional varieties but still mix registers in a way a native would not.

How to study

Read academic and journalistic German rather than material written for learners, and collect collocations and fixed prepositional phrases instead of single words. Spaced repetition at C1 is best spent on those fixed phrases, which fade without deliberate review and which place you above B2 in an examiner's ear. Practise the same argument in formal and neutral register, because register control is what C1 actually tests.

Where do the words after this list come from?

A list has an end. The words you keep for good usually turn up somewhere else — in a page you read, a show you watched, or a conversation you had — one at a time, and rarely at the level you planned for.

MindDory connects to Claude, Cursor, and other assistants that speak the Model Context Protocol, so a word you meet while you are chatting is saved to your deck as a flashcard without you leaving the conversation. There is no copy and paste, no CSV export, and no browser extension.
