B2 German Vocabulary List, Upper-Intermediate CEFR Words

Upper-intermediate German for professional and academic contexts, abstract arguments, and complex topics.

Roughly 2–3 years of study. Goethe-Zertifikat B2 / TestDaF.

About B2

B2 German opens up the Passiv (das wird gemacht, das wurde gemacht), modal verbs in past tenses (ich hätte gehen sollen), and the nominal style typical of formal German (die Durchführung der Maßnahme). Vocabulary expands to around 4,000 words for academic, business, and abstract topics. You start needing the precise distinctions: behaupten vs feststellen, vorschlagen vs empfehlen, scheinen vs wirken.

Who this list is for

If you can follow a German-language film without subtitles, read Die Zeit or FAZ, and lead a meeting in German, you're around B2. Most learners reach B2 after 2–3 years. Goethe B2 / TestDaF 4 is the minimum for most German university programs.

How to study

At B2 the differentiator is collocations and connectors. Native-feeling German uses chains like im Hinblick auf, in Bezug auf, von zentraler Bedeutung. Read German newspapers daily, even 15 minutes. Use spaced repetition with full sentences and noun-verb collocations (eine Entscheidung treffen, einen Antrag stellen, Rücksicht nehmen).
