Dual Coding: Why Words Paired With Images Are Remembered Better

A word stored only as a word has one way back into your mind. Attach an image to it and you have built a second route, and the two routes fail at different times. That is the whole of dual coding theory, and it is why the odd mental picture beats another ten repetitions.

Allan Paivio proposed dual coding theory in the 1970s, and the core claim is simple: we handle verbal information and visual information in two partly separate systems, and something encoded in both is easier to retrieve than something encoded in only one. Two routes to the same memory, and if one is blocked the other may still get through.

Around it sits the picture superiority effect, one of the more robust findings in memory research: given the same study time, people typically remember pictures better than the words for those pictures. Neither finding is new or controversial. What is strange is how little most language study makes use of them.

What dual coding actually claims

Not that people are visual learners. The learning-styles idea, that each of us has a preferred channel and should be taught through it, has been tested repeatedly and has not held up. Dual coding says something different and better supported: pairing channels helps almost everyone, regardless of preference.

The distinction matters because it changes what you do. You are not choosing pictures over text because you are a visual person; you are adding pictures to text so the memory has two handles rather than one.

Where it came from

Paivio's early experiments were straightforward: concrete words like hammer or elephant, which readily bring an image to mind, were remembered better than abstract ones like justice or tendency. He argued the concrete words were being stored twice, verbally and as imagery, and the abstract ones only once.

Richard Mayer later took the idea into instructional design, running a long series of studies on multimedia learning. The reliable finding there is that words plus relevant pictures beat words alone, provided the picture carries information rather than decorating the page. Stock photos that illustrate nothing do not help and can get in the way.

Why it works so well for vocabulary

A foreign word is, at the start, an arbitrary string of sounds. There is nothing in it to grip. An image gives the memory something concrete to attach to, which is exactly the logic of the keyword method: you find a sound-alike word in your own language and build a vivid mental scene linking it to the meaning. Richard Atkinson and Michael Raugh tested this on Russian vocabulary in the 1970s and found substantial gains over rote repetition.

There is a second benefit that gets less attention. An image bypasses translation. If the card for a word shows the thing itself rather than the equivalent in your first language, you are practising the direct link between word and meaning, which is what fluent use requires. Translation-only cards quietly train you to route everything through your native language, and that detour is what makes speaking slow.

How to use it without becoming an illustrator

The image does not have to exist. A mental picture works, and for abstract words it is often the only option: something odd, exaggerated, involving movement or people, held in mind for a few seconds while you say the word. Vividness matters more than accuracy, and personal beats generic every time, which is why other people's mnemonic lists rarely help you.

When you do use real images, keep them specific. A photo of one particular kettle is better than an abstract icon of a kettle, because it gives the memory more to hold. And use images for the words that resist you, not for every card; building a picture for a word you already learned in one pass is wasted effort.

Where it does not help

Abstract vocabulary, function words and grammar are poor fits for literal images. Trying to draw although is a waste of an evening. For those, the analogue of dual coding is a memorable sentence or a scene where the word does real work, which gives you the same second route through episodic memory rather than pictures.

Mayer's other consistent finding is worth heeding too: irrelevant images hurt. A pretty picture that has nothing to do with the meaning splits attention and adds nothing to retrieval. If the image does not carry the meaning, drop it.

Pair it with recall, not instead of it

Dual coding is an encoding technique: it improves how the memory goes in. It does not replace the retrieval practice that keeps it there, so it belongs alongside active recall and spaced repetition rather than in place of them. A vividly encoded word you never test yourself on still fades.
