A2 French introduces the passé composé (j'ai mangé, je suis allé), the main spoken past tense, and the futur proche (je vais partir). Vocabulary doubles to around 1,000 words covering daily routines, shopping, transport, weather, body and health, and the partitive (du pain, de la viande, des pommes), which has no clean English equivalent.
If you can describe your day, talk about last weekend in simple sentences, and order in a restaurant comfortably, you're around A2. Most learners reach A2 after 6–12 months. DELF A2 is sometimes accepted for residence applications in France.
A2 is where the choice between être and avoir as auxiliaries (j'ai mangé vs je suis venu) needs to click. Memorize the small set of être verbs (the "MRS VANDERTRAMP" mnemonic) and let the rest default to avoir. Use spaced repetition for verbs in passé composé form, not just infinitives.
