Band 3 is an extremely limited user who conveys and understands only general meaning in very familiar situations and suffers frequent communication failures. The vocabulary broadens to handle simple personal and everyday descriptions: routines, weather, basic feelings, shopping, and common past-tense events. Learners can now build short, mostly correct sentences, though range is narrow and errors are constant. This aligns with CEFR A2, the pre-intermediate stage.
You're around band 3 if you can describe your daily routine, talk about your family, and ask for basic information, but stall on any topic outside the familiar. This is where most learners land after roughly a year of casual study or a focused beginner course. It is below the level any institution accepts, so the goal is to push into B1 territory where real conversation becomes possible. Expanding from concrete topics into simple opinions is the key next move.
Move beyond naming things and start learning words that express time, sequence, and simple cause, since A2 is about connecting ideas rather than listing them. Use spaced repetition with full example sentences so you absorb how words behave, not just what they mean. Read short graded readers and note recurring everyday phrases as whole units. Record yourself describing a photo or your day, and check which words you reached for and which you were missing.
