IELTS Band 7 Vocabulary, Good User Level Words

Band 7 (Good user) enters the C1 advanced range, operational command, complex language use, and detailed reasoning.

Advanced. Band 7 corresponds to the first half of CEFR C1. Target band for competitive university programs.

About Band 7

Band 7 is a good user who has operational command of the language despite occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings, and who handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning. The vocabulary shows clear range: less common words used appropriately, awareness of collocation and style, and effective paraphrase under pressure. Errors still appear, but they no longer impede communication. This corresponds to the first half of CEFR C1.

Who this list is for

You're at band 7 if you can argue an abstract point, read a serious article at full speed, and use idiomatic and topic-specific vocabulary with only occasional misfires. Band 7, and increasingly 7.5, is the target for competitive postgraduate programmes, professional licensing in medicine and nursing, and several migration streams. The stakes are concrete: half a band can decide an offer or a visa. Moving toward band 8 means making the less common vocabulary consistently accurate, not just present.

How to study

Shift focus from acquiring new words to refining precision: distinguish near-synonyms by connotation and collocation, and review those fine distinctions with spaced repetition so the right shade comes first. Read widely in the topic areas you are weakest on and harvest exact phrasing rather than rough meaning. Record and transcribe your own Speaking answers to catch the collocation slips that examiners penalise at this level. Practise paraphrasing the same idea three ways, since flexible word choice under time pressure separates 7 from 8.
